"We are all by nature made in the same way in everything, both foreigners
 and Greeks."
                         -  Antiphon, Athenian Orator, 479-411 BCE

Who are we?

Coalition supporters have settled here from a number of different countries and, not surprisingly, possess a diversity of professional, technical and personal experience.

We are a group of like minded individuals who love living in Cyprus but are acutely aware of the problems that surround us and want to do something about them in order to help the community at large.

We aren’t beholden to any other group or political party although we have been successful over the past six years in creating strong links to other groups who share our aims.

We are just a group of volunteers who wanted to do more than just complain, who wanted to get involved and do something.

We are not seeking to change the world or, even worse, to recreate it in the image of the countries we left behind.

We just want the law to be enforced and applied equally to all.  Just like many Cypriots who feel the same way

We feel that the most effective way to achieve this is by means of democratically elected representation on the local council and to this end, in the autumn of 2006, we created a new “Coalition of Independents” so as to participate in the December 2006 local election

In our very first year we succeeded in getting one of our most active members, Linda Leblanc, a Canadian and Cypriot citizen, elected to Pegeia Council, the first foreign-born citizen and the first woman to achieve this.  In the Dec. 2011 local election, Linda was re-elected to a second term.

Having experienced years of little or no communication, we wanted a representative on Pegeia Council so that we could find out what was going on. Our five years’ experience on the Council demonstrates our record of providing timely information about important quality of life issues (cleanliness, water, taxes and other community services). Some key areas on which we have achieved improvements are financial accountability, transparency and the public’s right to information, especially with respect to planning and public Council meetings. We still have a long way to go.

What we offer:

·
A fresh voice calling for open, transparent, representative government
·
A long-term commitment to a clean and sustainable community
·
Better communication with residents about important Pegeia issues
· Monthly open meetings to discuss Pegeia topics
· Regular news updates by email
· “Surgeries” for issues that The Coalition might be able to help with
